Game Review: Planetside 2

Planetside 2 is a massively-multiplayer online first-person shooter computer game released by Sony Online Entertainment in November 2012.

This piqued my interest as it was:

  • a first person shooter
  • free to play
  • downloadable through Steam

I had actually watched Toby Turner (or Tobuscus as he’s otherwise known) play this game on his YouTube channel. This game looked like a lot of fun.

Then a couple of weeks later my friend Nigel said he had downloaded it, and I thought “Woo hoo! Someone to play it with!” So next thing I know, I’m downloading it as well.

I love, love, love this game.

Firstly, there is an Aussie server, which always makes things easier.

But man, is this game fast paced. You have to be paying attention of you will get sniped, or blown up by heavy infantry, or run over by a tank.

What I also love is that there are so many people playing at the moment, which is another reason to stay on your toes, because you don’t want to walk into the line of fire from one of your team mates, or in the path of one of your teams tanks. And you certainly don’t want to be responsible for taking out one of your team.

You get to choose from 3 factions, the yellow and blue New Conglomerate, the red Terran Republic, and the purple Vanu Sovereignty. Guess which faction I picked …

So after choosing Vanu (because they are purple), you then set up your character. Here’s another cool part, you can actually play as a female! Now I know that doesn’t seem like a big deal, but in Arma 2, another game I love where I like to play sniper, you don’t have that option. So even despite calling myself “Evil Cupcake”, people still think I’m a bloke because I can sometimes have a high kill count (true story).

You choose to be a Combat Medic, Light Assault, Heavy Assault, Engineer, Max or Infiltrator. You would think I would go Infiltrator as they are the most sniper like, but I’ve gone Heavy Assault.

I like Heavy Assault’s weapons, and the fact that you can fire off 50 rounds, and not just the slow one at a time of the sniper rifle.

The other reason I like Heavy Assault is because of the weapon used against the tanks. Three hits and they’re out!

You gain experience points which you use to level up your gear. You also level up your character, currently I’m level 8, but I’m trying to improve that. With each level, you gain another Rank, the name of the Rank changes depending on the faction you choose.

Even though I’ve not been playing long, I really enjoy this game. As I said earlier, it’s quick paced, lots of people, and sometimes you need to be super strategic, and not go all kamikaze like I tend to do. Bad Cupcake!

If you love first person shooters, you’ll love this. If you love games that have a story line, you’ll be disappointed, as there isn’t one. Well if there is, I don’t know what it is!

I give this game 9 snipers out of 10!
